Zach Knowles hopes prior Five Flags experience

pays off for Snowflake 100

PENSOCLA, Fla. – Even though Saturday’s Allen Turner Snowflake 100 doesn’t hold the same prestige as Sunday’s Snowball Derby at Five Flags (Fla.) Speedway, Zach Knowles and his Zach Knowles Motorsports (ZKM) team still look to leave their mark in the 100-lap dash.

Knowles, a native of Houston, Texas enters this weekend’s esteemed event on the heels of a successful season of local racing at Central Texas Speedway. While Knowles didn’t end the season with a victory, the 26-year-old continued to rack in strong finishes which gives the Texan momentum returning to the Sunshine State.

“I’m excited to go back to Five Flags this weekend,” said Knowles. “It’s been a couple weeks, but we have some momentum on our side from ending the year on a high note at Central Texas – and hopefully that carries over to the Snowflake 100 on Saturday.”

Knowles’ ZKM team will make its third attempt to make the Snowflake and while their two prior attempts have come up short, the avid racer is hoping third time is a charm.

“When it comes to the competition at Five Flags this weekend, there’s nothing that compares,” Knowles mentioned. “This will be my third year and I believe I have a good shot at this race with the experience we have picked up not only in our prior attempts, but traveling to Five Flags for some previous races too.

“There’s no room for error this weekend. The inch of a mistake and you can be out. We know this, so we’ve done our due-diligence and made sure our No. 51 Grant Sheet Metal / Zach Knowles Motorsports Ford Fusion is ready to compete.”

Knowles mentioned that Five Flags has its own unique driving style – but he’s hoping that his finesse of guiding his No. 51 ZKM Ford Fusion will pay dividends from practice to qualifying and to the race.

“I do like Five Flags, a lot,” he said. “It has its own unique way to drive and on top of that, the events going on throughout the week of the Snowball Derby just makes it a time to remember, that’s for sure.

“To me, the track is very line and temperature sensitive. That’s something that we’ll have to keep in mind throughout the weekend. We really need to have our car dialed in by the time we qualify to make sure we have a shot at racing on Saturday afternoon.”

In addition to Grant Sheet Metal, ZKM is proud to welcome the support of Material Express Inc., Frio Acres, Midwest Electric and REDCO Tool and Fastener for their final event of the 2016 season.

“We’re incredibly thankful for those who have made it possible for us to make it to Five Flags this weekend,” said Knowles. “Of course, we’d love to have more support – but that’s a continuing work in progress. If we have a good showing this week, we hope that could open some doors for us in 2017 and beyond.”

No matter what happens this weekend, Knowles if reflecting on the year where he had fun at the race track and his team was competitive.

“This season I am very pleased how we placed and performed,” he said. “I might not have come out with a couple of wins, but we learned a lot and ready to hit the ground running even harder next year. We have a lot of goals and aspirations and I hope we’re able to achieve at least some of them.”

Tentatively, Knowles is hopeful to participate in the open test for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards at Daytona International Speedway on Jan. 13-15, 2017.
