Sauter Goes Back-To-Back at Texas Motor Speedway

Johnny Sauter and the No. 21 Allegiant Travel team led only six laps to capture their second consecutive win in Friday night’s Striping Technology 350 at Texas Motor Speedway. The win marks the third straight victory for GMS Racing and third win of the season for Sauter.

Sauter started the 147-lap event from the 16th position. When the green flag waved, he went to work, quickly advancing through the field and reached the top five by lap 20. Sauter reported to crew chief Joe Shear Jr. that he needed front grip. The caution clock expired for the first time on lap 40 and Sauter visited pit road for four tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment. He restarted from the fifth position and remained in the top five until the next caution on lap 83 when he reported that his Allegiant Travel Chevrolet turned great but he needed some rear grip. He once again pitted for four tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment, restarting from the sixth position. Sauter worked his way to the second position over the ensuing green flag run, sitting behind teammate Spencer Gallagher as the final caution of the night occurred on lap 126. Sauter gained the lead for the first time off of pit road following a four tire stop but fell back to third on the restart. Sauter remained patient and with two laps remaining returned to the first position and held on for his third win of the season and 17th top-10 finish of 2016.

“The guys in the pits put me in position to win the race there at the end. Tab (Boyd, spotter) kept saying just keep up momentum and kept me calm and I just kept trying to do what I needed to do. Our Allegiant Travel Chevrolet was so strong on long runs all night. Everyone was a little discouraged after qualifying but I knew we had a truck to win. We’re peaking at the right time but we need to peak in a few weeks when it really counts at Homestead.”

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returns to the track on November 11 at Phoenix International Raceway.
